40-40,A-40,40-40,40-A,40-40,A-40,40-40,A-40,40-40,A-40,40-40,A-40

Serving for the Match

http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/news/interviews/2009-06-26/200906261246023590468.html
Q. What is the verdict on that today?

ROGER FEDERER: I thought it was a good match. I thought it was my best match of the tournament so far. I thought the rhythm was very high. We played a lot of tough points. I really thought, you know, from my side it was an excellent match.

Of course, you know, you also need the opponent to come up also with the goods to make it an exciting match, and I thought it was. Sure, I would have loved to win in straight, but he came back strong.

Maybe my serve let go just a little bit. But he started to pick side a lot as well and, you know, took the right decisions at the right time and deserved the third set in the end.

I was happy how I reacted. Thought I didn't panic. Was an excellent match in the end.

Q. Good for you terms of the tournament to have had more of a test?

ROGER FEDERER: Sure. I mean, why not? I mean, I thought I already played very well the first two matches. It doesn't really bother me how I come through. At the end of the day, it's important to come through and feel good when I walk off the court.

Q. Where were you and what were your immediate thoughts when you heard the news that Michael Jackson had died?

ROGER FEDERER: I was at the house late last night. Obviously, you know, I love his music. It wasn't clear, you know, what had happened, you know. So I waited for sort of to see what's gonna happen and the confirmation.

Sure, a very sad moment I think in the music world. You know, he touched many people. Same for me. But I'll obviously still listen to his music for many more years to come.

Q. What do you consider the aspect that you appreciate the most of his performances?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I remember, I don't know, back maybe in '88 or '89, he came to Basel. I was outside of the stadium, because there was such excitement that he would come. I was still very young. I think I went there with my sister, and we just listened from the outside, you know.

Yeah, always listened to his music. And, yeah, it's sad. You know, it really is.

Q. A lot of people are inevitably already speculating, looking at the draw, a possible Federer/Murray final. I presume you feel that's fairly premature at this stage, would you?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I think so. Yes.

Q. In a few weeks, Nelson Mandela is going to be honored in our country. Could you comment about your thoughts on him and your meeting him?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, unfortunately I've never met Nelson Mandela. Yeah, I don't know if I'm sad about it, but that's still definitely one of the dreams for me, you know, to have maybe a ‑‑ maybe getting to meet him.

But the thing is, it's hard to go down to Australia [sic] right now with the schedule being so full. But if I would go, I mean, of course I would try. Of course, only if he would like to.

You know, he's had an incredible life and he's been very inspirational to many people. He's definitely, you know, one of the peoples I would love to meet in my life.

Q. What do you think his legacy is?

ROGER FEDERER: I mean, I don't know. I mean, look, I mean, he's much older than I am, so I only know him sort of the end, you know, of his life. You know, it's the beginning of mine.

But I always looked up to him as a great man and very inspirational, that's for sure.

Q. Before playing the Wimbledon final, you will replay the Roland Garros final next round. What is your feel being playing Soderling once more? Can he be more dangerous on grass than clay?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, if you asked me before Paris, I would say he's definitely more dangerous on grass than on clay, but then you saw all those great matches he played in Paris and you're worried, too.

So he's definitely proven his point that he's a good all‑around player. I haven't actually thought about the match at all yet, you know. Too occupied with different things right now.

But I think it's going to be interesting to see, you know, how he's going to enter that match after coping with such a long tournament in Paris and see how fresh he still is. But I've played him here in the past, and I've played him on grass a few times now.

I've had success against him, but I know the danger because he hits extremely hard. Yeah, definitely got to be ready for that match.

Q. Your wife is pregnant obviously. Would you be happy if she gave birth in England? Would you be happy to have a son or daughter born in England?

ROGER FEDERER: I'm happy if the baby's healthy. That's most important right now.

Q. You broke Agassi's record today. 47th win.

ROGER FEDERER: Here?

Q. Yes.

ROGER FEDERER: Okay.

Q. Does that mean anything at all?

ROGER FEDERER: I didn't know about it.

Q. Just another record?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, it's not one I was dreaming about as a boy really (smiling). But it's nice to get. You know, I guess it's ‑‑ if you probably asked him, he probably wouldn't even know himself. So let's leave it at that.

Q. Fabrice Santoro has played his last singles match here. Are there any shots in his armory that you would have liked to have had or you'd like to acquire? It seemed when you played him you actually had quite a lot of fun. What was it like playing against him?

ROGER FEDERER: Uhm, yeah, he's definitely one of the players I like to watch most. I mean, he's so different to the rest. You know, was happy enough to play him a few times, and we've always had good matches. You know, he also beat me twice.

I think he's a great test for youngsters coming up, because it doesn't matter how great you are, he'll find a weakness in your game. Even though maybe there's not many there, he'll still make it really difficult for you to play well and to beat him.

That's the beauty of tennis. I think everybody has a chance. Doesn't matter if you're tall or, you know, smaller, it doesn't matter. And it's sad he's going out of the game, but he's had an incredible sort of 20 years of his tennis life.

I get along very well with him, so it's obviously sad seeing him going out of Wimbledon. But he's still got some tournaments left. Who knows, maybe we'll play each other down the road.

Q. That Santoro forehand, do you ever practice that?

ROGER FEDERER: I think all the players did it already once, but I can actually do it not bad. But he reads the game very well and he's got incredible touch. Many players, I think, would love to have that.

Q. Because of the unique day off here on Sunday, is there more of a sense here than anywhere when you get to the second Monday it's almost the start of a new tournament?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, I guess a little bit because I think it's the only Grand Slam that both sections of the draw play the same day. I think Monday, Wednesday and Friday, whereas maybe the other Grand Slams it's still overlapping. So I think, yeah, it seems like it's, you know, down to business in the second week.

I mean, sure, it's nice to start off, you know, with the second week. But this is where it gets really interesting for me, you know, as a top player.

Q. When you enter a match against Soderling with such a lopsided record in the past between the two of you, does that enter your mind at all either as a confidence boost, thinking he never has beaten you on any surface anywhere, or is there part of you that thinks maybe at some point he's got to win against me?

ROGER FEDERER: I mean, there's a bit of both. I mean, obviously you always figure there's only so many times you beat a player. But then at the same time, you get ready for every match, you know, in the best possible way.

I try not to underestimate because I respect all the players in a big way. And he's definitely one of those guys you come out and you might play well, but it still isn't enough, you know.

It's like today, for instance. Kohlschreiber, he hung in there even though I was playing great. That's what I expect with Soderling, as well. He's got a huge game. Now he's also got the taste of beating the top players. That only makes him more dangerous.

But I still think most important is, or what stands out to me, is that I've beat him so many times that it gives me an incredible amount of confidence, knowing that if I do play my game well, I should be fine.

But you never know. That's why I have to be very careful.

2nd Round
[2] R Federer (SUI) d G Garcia-Lopez (ESP) 62 62 64

1st set(62)
GL K K
RF KBKBK K

2nd set(62)
GL K K
RF KBK KBK

3rd set(64)
GL K K K K
RF KBK K K K

Serving for the Match

3rd Round

Wednesday, 24 June 2009

Q. Do you enjoy comfortable matches like that?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah. Felt good, you know. I expected much harder because he's been playing well in Eastbourne it was. He reached the semis over there.

And I've played him twice before where I saw he has some, you know, good forehand and steady backhand. On grass, you never know, so...

I was quite surprised I was able to win so easily today.

Q. How are the courts playing? Have you noticed any difference between last year and this year?

ROGER FEDERER: No. They feel the same. I felt the difference between today and the other day. It was very humid on Monday, so it was very slippery, sort of wet. But today was perfect sunshine. Then it gets slippery because I guess it's so hot, so it's different.

But the courts play nice, you know. Very few bad bounces. So it's a beautiful court.

Q. No different to previous years?

ROGER FEDERER: I don't think so, no.

Q. They do change as the tournament goes on. Is that something you have to adjust to?

ROGER FEDERER: A little bit. Yeah, I was thinking that during the match today, that, you know, I came out today and felt quite different already to the first day. The courts get run down very quickly. Next time probably I'll see Centre Court again, it's got even more scars.

As you move on, it's the same thing. So it's quite a change. I mean, you don't have to adjust a whole lot. But there's definitely more bad bounces, you know, after a while, especially where the serving area is, you know. Maybe you play there later on in the tournament more often.

Q. What about the speed of the courts compared to the other years?

ROGER FEDERER: It feels the same. I think when it's humid like it was on Monday it feels quite slow, you know. Just the ball doesn't travel through the air so much. Maybe with the moist on the grass the ball gets just a bit fluffy. So maybe it feels a bit slower then.

But today, again, you know, it was good weather. The conditions are pretty quick. You know, it's hard to return. If you have an aggressive style of play, I mean, that's the way to play then.

Q. The weather has been great and the roof hasn't closed yet. Do you now start to feel that maybe you would like to see how it works, the effect of it?

ROGER FEDERER: Uhm, I mean, there will always be a right time for those kind of things, you know. But I guess it would be nice to start off a match, you know, right away under the roof instead of going off and coming back on.

But that belongs to Wimbledon. You know, I've done it so many times. I don't get bothered by it. But I'm definitely looking forward to my first time under the roof, you know. I don't know if it's gonna be this year. But I'll stick around and get an opportunity. We'll see.

Q. We notice today after many years Mirka wasn't in your box. Should we wait for some special announcement to be made sooner than expected, or not?

ROGER FEDERER: No, no, not really. She's just not feeling, you know, a hundred percent. She only felt 95%, so we decided it's better if she takes it easy instead of sitting in the sun maybe, feeling worse the next day.

It's important for her to rest. She's already feeling better, which is good.

Q. Is it still 10 August, more or less, the date?

ROGER FEDERER: I never said it. I don't know who told you, but... you can speculate as much as you want.

Q. Mirka told me.

ROGER FEDERER: Mirka told you? I'm sure she did (smiling).

Q. Inside information.

ROGER FEDERER: She invited you, too, didn't she?

Q. A question about your Facebook account. Do you actually update everything yourself there? Was it all fun? What made you do that, your Facebook account?

ROGER FEDERER: I didn't understand the question, I'm sorry.

Q. Do you update everything yourself there?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah. I mean, obviously I have a person who helps me doing it, because I can't go all the time on it. But I try to update it, you know, as frequently as I can. It's a fun thing, really, you know, that's been a lot of pleasure lately.

Yeah, it's amazing how the fan base grows quickly, you know. So many fantastic fans, not only on Facebook. I think we're close to two million fans over there, and 250,000 fans on my own website.

So it's been nice, and I like to interact. They mean a lot to me, you know, that they support me so much ‑ maybe not only by Internet, but also the stadium, I can feel that. It's a way to thank them.

Q. What does Wimbledon mean to you?

ROGER FEDERER: A lot (smiling). Well, it's a wonderful tournament with incredible history. I feel very privileged having had the opportunity to play here as a tennis player. I think there's only a few tournaments in the world that do that to you. As a little boy, you want to play at.

For me, there was probably like three or four tournaments growing up, but always Wimbledon was the biggest dream and the biggest stage. So I feel already happy just having played here. But obviously winning it is even much more than I ever thought I would achieve here.

Q. There was a story in the papers this morning about yet another report of suspicious betting surrounding a tennis match, one played at Wimbledon this week. What are your views on the problem? Is this something you talk about in the locker room?

ROGER FEDERER: No, we don't talk about it in the locker room. But it's happened more frequently than we talk about it. You know, if it's happening or not, we are suspecting. We're not sure. But, of course, it has no place, you know, in tennis, those kind of things.

But it's hard to control. But I'm sure the ATP and the ITF, we're trying our best, you know, to catch those guys ‑ if there are any out there. I think we should have, you know, massive bans on those who get caught so they get really scared of doing it.

We talk about it in the Player Council, Player Board. Those are things definitely we're trying to fight, you know. We have a good setup, so we can't avoid that there are some funny results sometimes here and there. You know, that doesn't mean it's really happening.

Q. Is it tough to control, given the amount of players in the world game, the amount of information, flow of information about injuries to bookmakers?

ROGER FEDERER: Look, I don't know. I've never been approached. I never knew it existed until a few years ago when all of a sudden I heard about it. So I've been shocked, you know, to hear it.

Well, we always hope, you know, that the players also want the best for the sport. That's, at the end of the day, what it comes down to.

Q. I wonder if you had a chance to watch Andy Murray's match yesterday, and whether you were surprised that he lost a set to Robert Kendrick?

ROGER FEDERER: I saw a little bit. I didn't see too much. But, no, I mean, we know Kendrick can be very dangerous. So it's always possible for a guy to lose a set, especially on grass. If he serves well, plays the big points well, a set goes by pretty quickly, you know.

But he came through, so everything's under control for you guys (smiling).

Q. We haven't seen too many people that have held the No. 1 ranking for a long time. Can you talk about why you think that is, and what are the challenges to regaining that ranking?

ROGER FEDERER: The beginning was too fast?

Q. Very few people have held the No. 1 ranking for a long period of time, not like a week or two, that have lost it and been able to regain it. Why do you think that is?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, the thing is, I guess, depending what kind of tournaments you do win, you know, it stays in your ‑ how do you say ‑ system for a long time. And then if you don't have those big tournaments or they come around just right away after 365 days when it's about to fall off again, you don't stay No. 1 for very long.

So I guess to stay at the top for a very long time, you got to win a few of those big ones. If you only win ‑‑ still it's good to win just a couple of slams a year. But if you only win maybe one, you have sort of average results otherwise, you probably won't stay No. 1 for very long, because the big tournaments will come around and chase you, you know.

Q. How about physically and mentally reaching that mountaintop, losing it, trying to get back?

ROGER FEDERER: That, to me, doesn't seem the biggest problem. I just think then, you know, it's just hard to regain it because you've already had so much success. You can't have success for 20 years. You can play well for a long period of time, but can you always and always win again in the big tournaments? Because those are the ones that throw off most points.

That makes it hard, because you have guys that are on fire as well. Maybe if it's just for a year, they take away the No. 1 ranking just for a year.

Q. You played in the Olympics. A late report reviewed that the air pollution level in Beijing Olympics were three times worse than in recent Olympic cities. You were playing there. Did the air quality cause you any problem at all?

ROGER FEDERER: In Beijing?

Q. Yes.

ROGER FEDERER: I thought that one day where I practiced it was a bit funny, but I think that was also because it was a hundred percent humidity, which makes it hard already to breathe at 33 degrees.

Q. I mean the air quality instead of the weather.

ROGER FEDERER: No, it felt all right. I won in doubles, which is good, so...

I didn't feel any effect in doubles anyway.

Q. I have the feeling you're playing with a little bit more spin this year. Am I mistaken?

ROGER FEDERER: I think mistaken. Sorry to tell you (smiling).

Wimbledon 2009
Wimbledon, London, Great Britain

1st Round
[2] R Federer (SUI) d Y Lu (TPE) 75 63 62

07年FO 2Rスタラーチェ戦で見せたポール回しを思い出しました。あのときは本能の解説者:柳氏が「かっくい〜」と叫んでましたね(^^;

1st set(75)
YL K KB K K
RF K K BK K KB

2nd set(63)
YL K K K
RF KBK K K K

3rd set(62)
YL K K
RF KBK KBK

First Meeting

Q. Is it every bit as special to walk out there another year, even if you're not officially the defending champion?

ROGER FEDERER: Uhm, yeah, it is very special. It will always remain this way, you know. It's a very privileged spot, you know, Monday, 1: 00 p.m., so of course I feel honored.

I know that Rafa deserves it obviously more than I do this year. But somebody had to do it, so I'm very happy that they chose me, of course. Yeah, gets your heart beating, that's for sure.

Q. If you had a chance to tell Rafa what he missed in terms of playing on that brand‑new court, what would you tell him?

ROGER FEDERER: No, it's just being the first guy out on Centre Court, you know. Of course, there's been exhibition matches, you know, to test the roof and stuff, but it's not the same. I think it's already excitement when actually matches start at 12:00 or when the gates open at 10:00, it is, or 10:30. So when the people start coming into the grounds, it's just very special moments, you know. Obviously also the one when the first players walk out on Centre Court.

I mean, he's been part of incredible big matches, you know. Of course he wouldn't have a problem handling it, but it's still something he might obviously regret as well a little bit. That made his decision so difficult, I'm sure, as well.

Q. What about the feel of a perfect court that never has been played on before?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, when you get here early, too, you play on many great other grass courts, too. So, I mean, you can relate a little bit to it.

But it's just like the atmosphere out on Centre Court, you know, it's so different to Paris, for instance, or so different to what we just went through, the whole clay court season. It's just such a ‑‑ it's just different, you know. You've got to live through it to really be able to talk about it.

Q. There were times during your match today when I was reminded of an essay by the late American author, David Foster Wallace. It's called, Roger Federer as Religious Experience. I'm wondering if you have heard of this essay, read it, or what you think of it?

ROGER FEDERER: Sure, I remember his piece. I remember doing the interview here on the grounds up on the grass. I had a funny feeling walking out of the interview. I wasn't sure what was going to come out of it, because I didn't know exactly what direction he was going to go.

The piece was obviously fantastic. You know, yeah, it's completely different to what I've read in the past about me anyway.

Q. Can you make some comments on Lu's game?

ROGER FEDERER: I mean, I thought he played excellent, you know. He's a wonderful player. He has got a nice forehand, a nice backhand, very sound game all around. He's good all around. Seems like can he play well, especially on the quicker courts, hard courts and grass courts.

I knew the danger today. He's beaten good players in the past. I knew that as well, too, obviously. That was a tough first set. He actually remained tough throughout the match, which was good to see, in a way.

Q. What did you think of what it looks like now with the white roof there in place? Was there any part of you that secretly thought, Maybe I'd like to see what it looks like closed?

ROGER FEDERER: Uhm, well, sure. I mean, I guess the moment will come that I'll play indoors here, as well, you know. But you don't really hope for it during the match. Maybe before it's kind of nice so you play the whole match in the same way.

When I changed to, you know, not the Royal Box end, but the other end, and I saw the structure for the first time, because this is really where it stands out the most, it was different, you know.

But, you know, I've played in different Wimbledon Centre Court stadiums in the past few years now. Ones that didn't have a roof, ones that had the roof. I've been through all of those, but this one felt very much at home again. It felt great. It looks good, too, I think.

Q. Do you ever feel that you don't get as much credit as you deserve for making it as deep into tournaments as you do, not necessarily winning the tournaments, but winning these early‑round matches that some might take for granted?

ROGER FEDERER: Uhm, not really. I mean, I think I get the respect I deserve, you know, and people know ‑‑ I hope at least they know how hard it is and difficult to play against all these guys.

Because you have a little slip here or there, you know, or you don't play maybe as well on those important points, you see how good all these guys are, like Lu for instance today. Makes it hard, you know, to win all the time.

But, you know, I think people are okay with it. Maybe there was a time in 2006, 2007 where people just thought everything's easy, but it never is. It might look easy, but it's not.

Q. What is the mental challenge of these early‑round matches for you?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, the first one is different, obviously, to, let's say, round two, three and four. First one you hopefully want to get off to a good start, get it out of the way, find your way into the tournament, get the atmosphere, you know, of a tournament.

Once you're in it, I think things kind of are just a little bit easier just because you've been able to watch a few matches, your mind's right in the tournament; whereas before you're trying to be in it. It can be over quickly. I mean, thank God it hasn't happened in a long, long time that I've lost in the first round of a slam.

But it's not so easy, and then you've got to stay concentrated for a long time. Two, three weeks is a long time.

Q. You spoke about the difference between the Roland Garros clay court crowd and the crowd here, the difference in that feeling. Could you talk about the difference in the feeling? Are you more comfortable here in front of this crowd?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, obviously it's fun playing in front of a crowd that's so respectful towards, you know, every point you play. If it's an error, you know, they don't like to really applause it too much. If it's a great point, then they really come out, you know; whereas in other places, you know, it's all about a good atmosphere, waiting for that big moment to happen, you know, just building it up slowly, you know.

That's what I like also about the US Open, for instance, or the Australian Open. You have day sessions and night sessions that make it very different atmospheres.

Honestly, I don't know which one I prefer the most. I think the change is good, you know. Because if every single tournament had the same atmosphere, that would be a little bit boring, you know.

But it's not the case. Every country has different cultures, so it means different atmosphere, different people sitting there. Sometimes they're younger; sometimes they're older. That also changes the atmosphere a bit.

Obviously here you have no music on the court, whereas in America you have a lot of music, even publicity. It's different, you know. I like that.

Q. Since you had no grass court warmup tournament like usual, did it make today any different for you?

ROGER FEDERER: It's funny, I actually didn't even think about it I didn't have a grass court match yet this year. It's something I completely forgot about. I just felt good in practice the last few days.

I had some good practice matches, you know, with Safin and Youzhny and Wawrinka. Some good quality players. I felt like I was, you know, in good shape for my first round. That's what I remembered, not if I did play a tournament or not before.

But actually I'm very happy with my first round. I thought it was a very solid performance, because that's what it took today against Lu.

Q. As the champion two years ago, you set an unofficial record for the length of time you graciously took all the media requests for interviews and were here late into the night. It seems like you did that at the French this past year. What makes you feel compelled to be gracious that way, to fulfill those requests to this point more than anyone else has done that?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I guess it already starts that I speak a few different languages, you know. Then you have the papers, the radios, the magazines and whatever, you know. It ends up being a lot.

But, honestly, especially after I've won a tournament or if I think it's a big match, there is something, you know, that needs information, I don't mind giving time, you know. Half an hour more, one hour more sometimes, it's not the end of the world for me, you know.

I like to tell a good story. If it's ‑‑ the spectators who were in the stadium or there are people that couldn't be there, at least get something good to read about or to hear about.

I guess I was anyway well‑educated in this regard. I just think that it's important to take that time. It's part of tennis today, and I guess with the different languages, you know, that's something different, too, than what has been in the past with other No. 1's in the world who always had one or maximum two languages. That's changed obviously with me coming around.

I've always enjoyed it. It's not the most fun part of the job, but I also have my good time.

Q. Last year wasn't as much fun?

ROGER FEDERER: It was a good year. I don't know what you saw.

Q. Last year at the finals here is what I meant.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, you lose, you leave. It's pretty simple. You don't want to hang around (smiling).

Q. Did you feel any nerves at all today coming into this tournament after the French? Is there a sense that history is behind you propelling you rather than in front of you?

ROGER FEDERER: I missed the question. I'm sorry.

Q. Did you feel any nerves today different than other years?

ROGER FEDERER: No.

Q. How was it different than other years you came on? Is there a sense after having won the French that history is behind you?

ROGER FEDERER: No, nothing to do with the whole history part here. Honestly, I felt the same ‑‑ this is six times I've done it now, opening Centre Court. I always pretty much felt the same. Or five times.
Just that first moment walking out, you know, visualizing, you know, what's gonna come walking down the corridor. Warming up for the first time here at Wimbledon, it's just sometimes not an easy thing to do. But it's a fun thing. It's what you dream about.

Yeah, so it's actually always felt the same. Then you forget about everything that's happened in the past, you, know. If you're a great champion or not, you just want to enjoy the moment and hopefully get off to a good start. You just put your head down.

So there's always nerves in every match, every first‑round match at Wimbledon, I would say.

Q. When is the baby due?

ROGER FEDERER: I'm not saying. It's a pity we're moving on with language right now. So sorry (smiling).

Q. The one thing you haven't told is when the baby is due.

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I won't tell you.

Q. Is it going to be this fortnight?

ROGER FEDERER: What did I just say? I'm going to repeat myself: I'm not going to tell you (smiling).

http://www.sunadokei-movie.jp/index_pc.html

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/photo.php?pid=1796545&id=64760994940&ref=nf

I snuck on to center court this afternoon to get a first hand look at the court with the new roof...I made sure I got a picture to share with all of you. Wimbledon is awesome! There is no place like it in the world!

http://loopwheeler.sub.jp/blog/2009/03/

EUGENE TRACK JK

ここで「ああ、この娘がIMALUさんね」と気づきました(^^;

Rolex 。。
とか言ってるけど、どれも手が届かないレベルのものなので絞る以前の問題ですけどね( ̄▽ ̄;

Roland Garros French Open 2009
Roland Garros, Paris, France

Final
[2] R Federer (SUI) d [23] R Soderling (SWE) 61 76(1) 64

http://newyork.blog.tennis365.net/archives/article/186327.html

そして、迎えたServing for the Match。

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. We would like to know if you felt moresuspense than we felt? You won the firstset, second set in the tiebreaker, third, set break immediately. So for you it was easier than you expected,or...

ROGER FEDERER: I mean, sure, I expected a tough match todayobviously because Robin's been playing well and it's a final of Paris, one thatI've never been able to win yet.

So I knew the difficulty of thismatch. I was hoping for a good start; Igot it, which then obviously relaxed me. I think second set was key to stay with him and not give him too manyopportunities on my serve, which I was, again, able to do.

I played one of greatesttiebreakers in my career with the four aces obviously. But it was very hard mentally for me to staywithin the match during the match, because my mind was always wondering, whatif? What if I win this tournament? What does that mean? What will I possibly say? I don't know.

You can'thelp it but to tell yourself, you know, once you win you'll get all the time tothink about all these things, but they keep on coming back.

I was verynervous at the beginning of the third set because I realized how close Iwas. The last game, obviously you canimagine how difficult that game was. Itwas almost unplayable for me because I was just hoping to serve some goodserves and hoping that he was going to make four errors. It was that bad.

So, yeah,it was an emotional roller coaster for me.

Q. It'sagainst our rules to applaud at a press conference, but you deserved it.

ROGER FEDERER: Thank you. Thanks a lot.

Q. Do you consider this, looking back to Australia andthen coming forward, a rejuvenation in your career mentally and physically andin every other way?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I just think it's an unbelievableachievement, you know. You know, I mean,I'm very proud of my career, obviously. You know, I achieved more than I ever thought I would. My dream as boy was to win Wimbledonone day. I won that five times, youknow, like one wasn't enough.

But it's just ‑‑ I think the FrenchOpen, like for instance this victory, sort of came up over the last few yearswhen I realized what a great player I could actually become.

After starting to actuallygetting to love this city and the people and the center court, whereas in thebeginning I had such a hard time getting used to the conditions here and justnot feeling right for some reason. I hada lot of difficulties playing well on center court because the court was sobig.

I've come along way. To get it at the end as thelast remaining Grand Slam, it's an incredible feeling.
I'm, of course, very proud at this verymoment.

Q. Youwon Wimbledon at 21 and Australiaat 22 and the USat 23. Is there a value in life, agreater depth of feeling in having waited for something?

ROGER FEDERER: Absolutely, especially being so close for thelast few years. You know, maybe close, maybe far. It depends how you look atit. I think it was very hard, you know, accepting the first defeat in 2006 I think was my first final here.

I lost in the finals and I was like,Oh, my God. I got to wait one entireyear, and then I don't even know if I'll make the finals again. The last few years have been easier for meapproaching the French Open just because I've been more relaxed and more awareof what's happening around me.

So I think, yes, the waitingand the age definitely has a big impact on how important and how nice thisvictory actually is. It's been a longtime coming, and I'm happy I got it today. I'm very proud.

Q. Lookingback on spring season this year, I think you struggled with your play I thinkagainst Djokovic and Murray, but now you came back strong. So are you believing you could completecareer Grand Slam?

ROGER FEDERER: Yes, I did. You know, people talked a lot about me having lost the grip andstuff. To some degree I guess it's true, because I lost my No. 1 ranking. But Ididn't fall out of the top 10 or the top 1000. I still played very consistent, especially at the Grand Slam level. My record shows it there.

But important for me was to continueworking hard, you know. I had issueslast year. We all know what theywere. People sometimes don't give youtime to actually let them heal or let ‑‑ you figure them out, you know.

I'm not the type of guy who'sscared of going into sometimes matches not feeling great at all. I don't care if I lose three times firstround, I want to see where I'm at in a tournament situation.

I can also,of course, decide not to play for three months and then come back very strongagain. That's not the road I chose. I'm the guy who likes to face it and see ifI'm good enough or not. I actuallyplayed pretty good.

I was happywith the level of play. I thought Iplayed great in Australia. It was also a good tournament in Indian Wellsand Miami untilI played Murray and Djokovic and all those guys where all of a sudden my gamecompletely left me for some reason. I didn'tknow why. Maybe it was because my servewasn't helping me out, the back was still hurting me. I don't know what the problem was.

So I alwaysbelieved in my chances to win Parisor any Grand Slam. It's really for thosethat I tried to keep myself most fit. That was also sone of the reason why I took six weeks off after theAustralian Open. Let everything heal andlet everything settle, and then I came back very strong.

I'm very,very happy right now.

Q. Howmuch is important in this belief or in this win the fact that Mirka is pregnantand you're awaiting a baby? How muchimportant is in your mind to think about this?

ROGER FEDERER: I feel like it's two different issues, different things. You know, my privatelife is one part of my life. Theprofessional one on the court is another one. Thank God Mirka's involved in both of them.

I'm, of course, very happy with thepregnancy. Mirka is feeling great, andwe're looking forward to this upcoming summer and hope things go well for her.

But I don't know how muchthis victory has to do with it. It'sdefinitely nice to get it at this stage of my career. I think it couldn't have come at a bettertime. So obviously the timing is veryspecial with getting married and Mirka being pregnant.

Maybe it'smore emotional, but maybe not. I don'tknow how much it has to do with it, to be quite honest. I'm just happy that my life is in great shaperight now.

Q. McEnroenever won here, and Edberg never won here and Pete never won here. Are you aware there were a lot peoplethinking you sort of fit into that category and it would have been shame if youdidn't do it?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I always tended to disagree withthose. I had the feeling I gave myselftoo many opportunity over the years at the French Open. I think Pete was maybe once in thesemis. Other players were maybe once inthe finals. I was in the final threetimes, one semis before, and I was able to win Hamburgfour times and be in the finals of Monacoand Rome, ofall those tournaments.

I knew the day Rafa won't be in thefinals, I will be there and I will win. I always knew and that I believed in it. That's exactly what happened. It's funny. I didn't hope for it,but I believed in it.

Q. Sorry to bring you on to not quite such anice event. You were confronted today bysome guy coming onto the court. It couldhave been a very nasty incident. Could youjust talk us through how you felt when you saw him? The security seemed to take an age to getthere as well and stop him.

ROGER FEDERER: First, I didn't know exactly whathappened. All of a sudden I heard thecrowd, and I looked over and he jumped over the fence or something. That gave me a fright, just like seeing himso close right away.

The good thing is like it happenedbefore, you know, so that's why I guess I didn't panic. It happened in Wimbledon before when two guysran out on the court, and once I think it was in Montreal when I lost to Roddick when I wasplaying for my No. 1 ranking in the third set.

Som it wasn't the firsttime. Normally they always kind of lookat me and go, I'm so sorry I have to do this, because they have some sort of areason for it, you know. (Laughter.)

I rememberthe English guy was actually quite funny. He looked at me and goes, I'm so sorry I have to do this. I was like, Okay, just don't touch me, youknow.

This guy, Idon't know, he looked at me and I was not sure what he wanted. It seemed like he wanted to give mesomething. So I was actually okay, because I saw he wasn't pulling for anything stupid.

Itdefinitely felt uncomfortable once he came close to me. Looking back, it definitely threw me out ofmy rhythm a little bit. One game later Ithought that maybe I should have sat down and taken a minute or two to kind ofreflect on what just happened. Was thatreal or what?

But I don'tknow. I mean, I wanted to play on andwhatever, get over it. But it was atouch scary, yes.

Q. SvetlanaKuznetsova, who won this tournament yesterday cheers for you. Do you know about it? And what do you think about Russian women andmen's tennis?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I was very happy for Svetlana that shewas able to win. Russian tennis has beenincredibly strong over the last few years. I always said I liked her game, so I was very happy for her, to see hersucceed here.

Yeah, they have phenomenal playerson both sides. I'm sure we'll see moreof that in the future.

Q. I know isn't your plan, but if you had toretire tomorrow, would you retire happy?

ROGER FEDERER: Yes, I would, yeah, because I feel like I'veput everything out there, you know. Ifought for this moment and stayed positive and calm when things maybe weren'tgoing so well, even though they were still going great.

So, yeah, I would ‑‑ I alwayssaid it doesn't matter when I retire, I'll be at peace. I can walk away from this game tomorrow, butI don't choose to because I love this game too much.

It hasn't appeared in my mindonce yet that I want to retire. Tennisis not forever; I know that. But I'lltry to definitely enjoy it as long as I can.

Q. Roger, with the rain and the history in your mind and the rain and this crazy guy, wasthis as mentally challenging a final as you've had to deal with? Obviously physically playing you weren'thaving a problem, but mentally.

ROGER FEDERER: I think it was difficult conditions, like yousay. I was hoping for ‑‑ I said it inthe press the other day I think when I spoke Swiss German. I said I hope for little ‑‑ no rain, becausethat would not be nice for anybody: me,the opponent, for the spectators. Therain interruptions are tough to deal with especially in a Grand Slam final.

Now, I do feel like it's ‑‑ itwas meant to be this kind of weather for me. Looking back, you know, especially I think I drew inspiration the wayAndre won here ten years ago.

I remember ‑‑ I don'twant to say how lucky he got, but how things turned into his favor when heneeded it the most. That's exactly whathappened to me the last couple weeks. We're not talking about the Haas house forehand I had to hit on thatbreakpoint down in the third set or other things.

But I wasin desperate situations during this tournament. This was just part of this tournament, this terrible rain today and thistough conditions, the swirly winds and the dangerous opponent. I think I was able to handle all of it fortwo weeks.

I also saidit many times that if you want to be a good clay courter, you have to be ableto play in these kind of conditions and in nice conditions, too. That's where I've had my success in claybefore, on bad ‑‑ in storms and in nice weather. I was able to show it these last coupleweeks. It's been very nice.

Q. Whatsignificance, if any, for you is there to winning your 14th Grand Slam titleand matching that record?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I don't know. It almost gets forgotten a little bit, butit's really what ‑‑ I don't want to say it means the most to me, but it'san incredible feeling already having reached 14 and not having been sort of derailedby maybe losing a couple Grand Slam finals against Rafa.

That sort of I took my time and wasable to regroup and come up to equal Pete's record, you know, here, in Paris is unbelievable.

Andre giving me the trophy, who was the last man to win all four majors, it seems just very fitting in away. I played against both players aswell, and have the most respect for both of them.

I'm surethey're happy for me. I know it. It's a good feeling to have.

Q. Doyou think the most important point of the tournament was the breakpoint whenyou are serving in the third set with Haas?

ROGER FEDERER: I mean, it seems like it to me. But, sure, if you want to put it down to onepoint, let's put it down to that one. Ihad to play many tough shots during this tournament. Maybe one was also the breakpoint at 5‑4against Soderling when he shanks the forehand. Who knows if he makes it and gets to 5‑All. We don't know.

You have to go through manysituations like this. I'm happy I wasable to handle all of them. Like I said,I had tough moments against Acasuso, Haas, Mathieu, Monfils as well when he hadset point, and against Del Potro, and again today, as well.

So I always had to come upwith the goods, and I did great. Ireally did.

Q. Manypeople said that you are in the history and compare you and Rod Laver and PeteSampras and say that you are the best in the history. What do you think about that?

ROGER FEDERER: I always thought it's nice to be part of thebest. I feel very privileged and proudof my accomplishments in this sport. That's also why I thought I had to mention them on the court. I don't know if we'll ever know who was thegreatest of all‑time, but I'm definitely happy to be right up there, that's forsure.

Q. You are probably not yet the best in history, but could this be a goal for you in the next years to come before the end ofyour career?

ROGER FEDERER: Look, I just tried to have the best possiblecareer I can, and then I think it should be judged at the very end, youknow. How well did I do? Good? Great? Very good? Or medium? (Laughter.) I don't know. It's for other people to decide.

Right now, I'm still playing. I haven't retired yet, and I think I stillhave many more tournaments to go and many more Grand Slams. I'll give it my best shot to have the bestpossible career. I am not addicted bybeating all possible records, but I'm very proud of them.

I hope I can maintain recordsI have going at the moment, and I hope to break some other ones along the way. I hope to stay healthy, of course. That's most important. Because motivation and drive is not a problemfor me it seems like.

Then Ithink with the change coming in my life with the wife and baby, it's gonna bevery exciting next few years.

THE MODERATOR: Questions in French, please.

Q. Could you please tell us two things: This last game you were saying in English hownervous you were. Can you tell us thatagain? Second question, what did you doyesterday evening, and how did you manage the day before the match?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, the last game ‑‑ I'm never afraid toserve for the match. It's probablysomething difficult to do, but I always felt that the best was to serve for thematch in the end.

When you a break or a double break, you to expect you'll be serving for the match, so this is why I've never beenafraid of that moment.

But it was so emotional toplay this first serve in the first game. I tried to serve four aces. Hewould make four errors, and that was done. So that's the ideal scenario.

But I alsoknow that this is not likely to happen, so I tried to remain aggressive. I tried to remain smart with regards to mychoices. Maybe I was not strong enoughon my shots, on my forehand at 15‑Love or at 30‑All.

But theseare things which are so difficult to achieve in those precise moments, and thisis why sometimes you see that the score is turned around. Well, I don't know. You know, mentally, I was elsewhere. I was not seeing myself winning, but I was sohappy I was in that situation. I had toremain so calm, and at the same time I had to try and do my best. So it was such a magic moment. It's difficult to describe why and how.

But as foryesterday night, I was watching the two matches I played against Soderling in Madrid and in Paris,Bercy, here last year. I had the CDs tosee what he does well and not that well to prepare. Then we talked about the match, and then Ihad dinner in my room with Mirka.

You know, Ididn't want to have a big group of people around me. I wanted to stay in my zone, in my comfortzone, and it worked out and I'm happy.

Q. What'sthe best for you, is it winning the four in one year or winning 14 Grand Slamtrophies?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, the four are incredible. I mean, I don't want to comment myself, butif you've won 14 Grand Slam trophies, it means you've won the three others manytimes, which is difficult to achieve over many years.

Or if you win the four, you can dothat quicker because you're in good shape and it's the right time for you. Both are very difficult to achieve. Maybe it's easier to today to win the four inone year than it was 30 years ago when grass was much faster, when hard surfaceswere much faster, when clay was what it was.

In the past, you had clayspecialists and hard surfaces specialists. Now it's more mixed maybe to make it easier. But at the same time, it makes it moredifficult. I don't know.

Q. Soyou waited 27 years to win in Paris. Youwon the US Open, Wimbledon, and the Australian Open much earlier. Does to give a special flavor to this trophy?

ROGER FEDERER: First, I never waited 27 years, because 27years ago I was just born. My parentsnever told me, If you don't win Roland Garros we take you to the orphanage. They never said I had to win RolandGarros. It never came from them. They just hoped. They just wished I could achieve that.

But, having to wait gives you morepleasure, because a first victory, Wimbledon in 2003, that was a shock. Later on, you know what it's like winning, managing pressure, walking on the central courts, with the press, havingsponsors, being rich and famous. Yourlife changes.

Mine changed as from thefirst Grand Slam tournament I won in 2003. So today, yes, satisfaction is huge winning here in Paris after I was soclose many times in a row. So it was theoptimal moment for me to win Roland Garros.

Q. Why? Determination? Aggressiveness? Serve, didn't work in the other matches? Is it because of Soderling, or what?

ROGER FEDERER: I don't serve at 280 kilometers perhour. Each player is different. This is what makes tennis difficult. The conditions are different every day, andthe opponent is different every day. DelPotro, Soderling, and Monfils have a similar style, but they're different atthe end of day. They return differentlyand they have different favorite shots. They serve differently at important key moments. So you can't always serve or move in the sameway.

In tennis, you can lose althoughyou've played well; you can win although you've not played great tennis. Everything is possible. You need to make the good choices at theright time, and this is what I managed to do here. I'm very proud.

Q. What came to your mind when Soderling's lastball went to the net?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I hoped it wouldn't come on myside. Then I had to play a backhand, andI hoped I would surprise him. But heplayed on the frame of his racquet. Themoment the ball hit the net you know it's over. You don't know what's going to happen, if you want to run around thecourt or fall on the court or just do nothing.

I had those same reactions. I just kneeled on the court. This is what I did when I won against Samprasin 2001. This was almost the same thing, because that was something that I dreamt. That's the best way for me to express myself, to really feel that I won.

Q. When Nadal lost, you didn't make manycomments about it because you had to remain focused on your nextopponents. You had to be focused on thatrather than on Nadal that was no longer there. But now it's over, so can you tell us if you thought, okay, this isgonna be a good year for me? Did it cometo your mind?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I knew I had bigger opportunities thanthe years before, because, you know, records against Nadal are tough forme. Even I had defeated him in Madrid, Iknew that if he was no longer in the draw, things would be easier for me. I was not happy he lost. That's not the type of guy I am.

This is also why I had to keep myfeelings to myself. The press wanted tohear me and listen to what I had to say. When the time came for the press conference, they wanted me to saysomething about it. But to me, it'simportant to have respect for Rafa for everything he's accomplished over thelast four years. He never losthere. That's an exceptional record, andit shows how difficult it is to win a tournament five times in a row.

That's something. I know. I've done it in Wimbledon and US Open. He tried to achieve it here, and it shows it's not easy to achieve. Of course, I was disappointed for him, but Ialso knew that it was a big opportunity for me. But it also increased pressure on me.

Didn't makemuch difference right at that time, but for the final it did because I was not playingNadal but Soderling.

Q. Whatdo you foresee for Soderling? Do youthink he can win a Grand Slam?

ROGER FEDERER: I think he should be better on fastersurfaces. This is where he had thebiggest successes, on indoor tournaments. The US Open and Wimbledon are courts that should be better suited to histennis.

I think that it's important that hecontinues to work hard and take what's positive from this tournament and moveon.

It's difficult, but I guessit's something he can do.

Q. Twoshort questions: One, after you had beendefeated four years in a row, have you ever had any doubts you would make ithere in Paris? Second question, when youdreamt you would win here, did you dream these conditions with this light, therain?

ROGER FEDERER: No, I always had faith in my chancehere. Even if I had very tight rounds atthe end of tournament, I knew that I had the chance here in Roland Garros, because I'm too good a player not to have a chance at the end. That's one thing.

Second thing, I don't know if I hadseen the day would be like this. Iwanted to ‑‑ my dream when I was a kid was to win in Wimbledon ongrass. I was not dreaming I would winhere. This is something I hoped, but Ican't tell you I had any image in my head of how I would win.

Then I was so close and I sawRafa winning, and so I hoped I will achieve that one day. I was almost sure I would be kneeling on thecourt if I was to win here.

Q. Sincelast Sunday and the elimination of Nadal, there were great expectations onyou. Was it the longest week of yourlife?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, these were two long weeks, butespecially the last one, because it was as if I had to play four finals againstHaas, Del Potro, Monfils, and Soderling. The pressure is so big. Peoplereally wanted my to win.

It was very difficult to manage allthis. This is why I'm very tired rightnow. I think it's going to take me a bitof time to sort of accept this victory. It came as a surprise in the end because I've never won here, but thefeelings were great, absolutely great.

This is why I think it mighttake me a bit more time to realize that I made it.

Q. Soderlingplayed beautiful matches all along the tournament. Today he was almost absent during the firstset. What happened? Was it the pressure of the final? How do you analyze this?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, no, I don't think so. He probably didn't have the beginning of thematch he was expecting, because I was playing well. But when I analyze the matches he played andwhen I saw how he won, I said, yes, he won against guys who were playing veryfar from the baseline.

So this gave him time to organizeand he used his big shots. I never hadmany problems returning his shots. Iknew that there would be rallies, and it was important for me to be close tohim, to play hard against him, and use the advantages I have on clay.

This is exactly what I wantedto do, and it worked out. This is how Ibeat him the last nine times. I have thefeeling that the other opponents let him play too much. This is what I tried not to let him do.

Q. Iasked you the question on Friday, and you said, Ask me the question onSunday. I can't remember what it was, though. Well, it was about did you havesigns that it really was your year.

ROGER FEDERER: Yes. Well, the way I won the match against Acasuso and Tommy Haas gave methat feeling that this could be a good year. Then Rafa lost, and Djokovic had lost before that, so it didn't makemuch difference. But it allowed me tohave greater hopes.

But there were moments when I was soclose to losing. I feel it's just likeAgassi when he won in his days. It's notthat we're lucky, but we need to use luck when it's there. When I look at how I practice so hard, thinking I'm doing all this for Paris, for Roland Garros, everything came in atthe right time.

Maybe in some matches I wouldhave liked to have them earlier, but I managed to make the good decisions indifficult situations. Winning tightmatches showed me that, yes, maybe this is the good year.

This is whyI didn't want to answer your question. You never have any guarantees. IfI break my leg on the court, maybe it's not the good year. So I had to wait and see what would come out.
